Grace Christian Mission Hospital is the vision of Reverend Jack Shaw for a ministry to the physical health and spiritual growth of the people and community of Nakuru, Kenya, East Africa.
A ten acre tract of land near Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya has been purchased for construction of the Hospital and a first option to buy is held for an additional adjoining five acres. The project is divided into two basic parts reflecting the dual goals of the planned ministry. It is anticipated that by providing for the physical needs of the people the opportunity will be earned to minister to their spiritual needs.
The Hospital will be built in order to provide much needed preventive and curative health care services to the people, while the Chapel and Bible Study Institute will provide for the needs of the spirit and gather a Christian community.
MSAADA's experience with hospital planning and construction in East Africa was called upon to give completed physical form to the Hospital, Chapel and Bible Study Institute. Perception of the needs and requirements for the project, as well as inspiration for its development, comes from Jack Shaw Ministries.
Frequently Asked Questions about Grace Christian Mission Hospital
Why a hospital?
GCMH is a ministry to the physical health & spiritual growth of the people and community of Nakuru, Kenya, East Africa. It is anticipated that by providing for the physical needs of the people the opportunity will be earned to minister to their spiritual needs.
Who will be served by the hospital?
Residents of Kenya, which has one of the highest rates of population growth in the world. 50% of the population live on less than a dollar a day, and 850 people die daily from HIV/AIDS. Less than 38% of the people have access to sanitation. Health staffs assist only 44% of births.
Where will the hospital be located?
Nakuru is located 160 kilometers (100 miles) northwest of Nairobi along the main road from Nairobi to Northwestern Kenya and Uganda. The town of Nakuru, located near the Equator, in the center of Kenya, is a population center and one of the more densely populated areas. Kenya has one of the highest rates of population growth in the world.
The land of the 10-acre site, obtained by the ministry for construction of the hospital, is grassland that slopes slightly downward toward the Southeast. Water is piped to and through the site. However, a well is planned to adequately service the growing hospital and provide for emergency water needs. Electrical service is connected to adjacent lots. The site is well-drained and suitable for building.
What is the climate like in Kenya?
Nakuru lies just 30 kilometers south of the equator at an elevation of 1852 meters (6,000 feet) above sea level. This high elevation provides Nakuru consistently pleasant weather with temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees through most of the year.
There are two rainy seasons. The long rains begin in late April or early May and last into June. The short rains are normally in October or November. Large amounts of rain fall in short periods during both rainy seasons, often making dirt-surfaced roads impassable and travel difficult in many areas. The 10-acre hospital site is not far from the main road and is connected by an adequately maintained graveled lane.
What are the planning goals for the hospital's construction?
The long range goals for the Hospital and consideration and planning for the building layouts include:
- Clear separation of the compound into the following distinct areas of activity:
Chapel and Bible Study Institute
Out-patient, Prenatal, Antenatal, and Mother/Child Healthcare
In-patient Hospital Area
Hospital Service Area
Compound Service Area
Staff Housing Area - Accommodation of phased future construction of the Hospital includes considerations for good flow and function of the hospital at all stages of its growth.
- Security, including control of access to the compound and access between areas within the compound, as well as total building security is planned.
- Strong visual identification of the Hospital and its entryways, including the clear indication that the Hospital is a Christian institution is planned.
- Building construction, that is of a good sound standard for Kenya and of materials that will require the minimum of future maintenance, is planned. The buildings are to be attractive without being elaborate.
- Housing is planned to provide pleasant views and privacy. It is important that visiting medical staff have an enjoyable experience and that the housing is valued by and is attractive to permanent Kenyan and/or temporary transient staff.
- As is the practice for MSAADA's work, accommodation for local climate considerations, natural lighting and ventilation, vehicular and pedestrian circulation, as well as the use of locally available materials, will be considered in all aspects of the design and construction.

Message from Jack
Background
"In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul." Ps 94:19
My wife Grace and I, and our family, suffered a terrible loss recently. Our precious 24-year-old daughter, Sarah, went to be with God, as a result of the tragic effects of addiction.
Believe me, when something as unimaginable as this happens, it will either "uproot" a person... or make his roots grow deeper... But he will NOT remain the same.
This has been no exception with me... it has had, and continues to have, a traumatic impact on my life and I very much appreciate the help and prayers of others.
I truly believe God's Word when He says, "He will turn what the devil means for evil into something good." To that end, He has led me to begin a ministry of offering hope and comfort to those who may be struggling with the horrific overflowing effects of addictions.
Sarah told me one time, "Dad, when I'm being good, call me Sarah Grace." Grace was her middle name. We know Sarah's "being good" because she's with God. Therefore we've named this new ministry... "SarahGrace, For Freedom... For Life."
With addictions and codependency at epidemic levels in our nation, SarahGrace ministries offers group therapy & counseling for family members, parents, friends and loved ones; with the hope of helping them overcome the fear and frustration of addictions, codependency, abuse and loss.
We believe that as a group we can work toward freedom from addiction through honesty and self-awareness and that we can offer comfort to those who have suffered loss to addiction. We believe that together we can achieve victory over the powerlessness of addiction... and, best of all... remain free.

Jack Shaw and his wife Grace; married for nearly 50 years, have five children (one of them now in heaven), and a growing list of grand children.
Jack is an ordained minister; and the founder and President/COB of Jack Shaw Ministries International (JSMI)
Johnny Cash and Jack Shaw were friends and as close as brothers for well over twenty years. Early in their friendship, John had asked Jack to call him every day, which he did for many years. Their conversations would envelop a variety of subjects, but always lead to discussing something about God, His Word, Heaven, spirituality, etc.
John and June Cash each served as founding members of the JSMI board of directors from 1986 until their home going in 2003. They were faithfully committed to the develpoment of JSMI's Grace Christian Mission Hospital (GCMH) project, a God-given vision for the desperate people of Kenya E. Africa. Their son, John Carter Cash, currently serves on the JSMI board, and is actively involved in its work in Africa as well. With God's grace and leading, JSMI is moving forward with the construction and staffing of the GCMH project that will ultimately impact the poor and hurting of Kenya, a Nation where over 850 die each day from AIDS alone.
For many years Jack traveled the world with John and June, their family, and others who were part of the 18-member group that comprised 'The Johnny Cash Show'. At John and June's request, Jack would lead them, and others who would attnend, in a Bible study before each show. He also ministered and prayed with those from the audience who, through John's invitation given just before the finale of Gospel songs, would come down to an area near the stage where Jack would be positioned, to talk with him at each show's close. Many came. Many prayed and accepted Christ. Many had questions about God and His Word. Many expressing desperate needs that very likely would never have been mentioned in any other setting were counseled. All, by God's grace, were helped.
Jack is also a Christian businessman; and the founder and President/CEO of three successful companies, Jack Shaw recently received the Entrepreneur 2000 award from Pennsylvania Business Central magazine and was recognized as one of the top 100 people in Pennsylvania. Shaw Steeple Jacks, Inc. (www.steeplejacks.us), rebuilds and restores church buildings across the United States. Cat Claw, Inc., (www.catclaw.com) manufactures avian repellent technology available internationally. SPIRITECH, Inc., (www.spiritech.us) a partner member of the American Shipbuilding Association, provides research and development technology for the US Navy, and state-of-the-art waterjet manufacturing technology services to leading Defense Contractors and commercial clients.
Reverend Shaw's God-given creativity has also allowed him to develop innovative products and services that create opportunities for jobs and personal growth. Jack is the holder of more than a dozen patents.
With God's grace and leading, Jack Shaw Ministries is moving forward with a vision that will directly impact the people of Kenya, East Africa; the construction and staffing of Grace Christian Mission Hospital.
LIFE GOAL: "Having accepted Jesus Christ as my eternal Lord and Savior (according to John 3:16 & Romans 10: 9-10), my personal goal in life's journey is to daily submit to the will of God; nothing more, nothing less, nothing but. Reporting for duty at His feet each day, and committing my way to Him, spirit, soul and body, allows His Spirit to be the guiding force in the life He's given me. Through trusting Him then to guide my steps and provide my need (through mistakes, successes and all in between), I can become ever more capable of helping others along the way, and, hopefully, lead them to also trust their will and their way to our Heavenly Father. "For with God nothing will be impossible." (Luke 1: 37 - NKJV)"

Cash For Kenya: Live in Johnstown , PA is your free gift with every $20.00 donation to JSMI
There is more than the legend of Johnny Cash that lives on. There is even more than his timeless music. There is also one of his dreams -- to help build a hospital in Kenya - an idea of Reverend Jack Shaw who was one of Cash's closest friends and spiritual advisers. On September 17, 1991, The Johnny Cash Show performed a benefit concert for Jack Shaw Ministries Intl. in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Now that heartfelt concert, featuring quintessential performances of many Cash classics just before he was about to redefine his career and gain a new generation of fans around the world, is available for the first time on DVD with CASH FOR KENYA: LIVE IN JOHNSTOWN (Mercury Nashville/UMe), to be released October 21, 2008.
Reverend Jack Shaw, who produced the DVD, continues to lead the effort to build not only the hospital in Nakuru, Kenya, but also a center for education to help prevent the spread of AIDS and other diseases plaguing Africa.
Writes John Carter Cash in the liner notes: "My father is still here in spirit and his enlightened passion endures. His wish to see the continuance of Jack's vision is coming true, in numerous ways. So as you watch this concert, and are taken in by the man's music, his charm and charisma, remember what he is singing for. And remember the hope that drives him and those who still share his hope."
Along with wife June Carter Cash, son John Carter Cash, The Carter Family, and the rest of the Johnny Cash Show players, the man himself is as inspired on CASH FOR KENYA: LIVE IN JOHNSTOWN as he ever was. His enthusiasm towards his audience is earnest, his inexhaustible spirit dominating the stage as he performs hits spanning his career, from "Get Rhythm" and "Ring Of Fire" to "Jackson," "If I Were A Carpenter" and "Folsom Prison Blues." The concert also emphasizes the downhome traditional, with "The Wabash Cannonball," "Peace In The Valley," "Keep On the Sunnyside," "Lonesome Valley" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken."
Among the rarely recorded, in the studio or live, are "Man In White," "Angel Band," "Beautiful Life" and "The Greatest Cowboy Of Them All." Also heard are "A Thing Called Love," "Five Feet High And Rising" and "Pickin' Time."
At the time of the Johnstown concert, the Kenyan hospital was a dream. Today, that dream is becoming a reality -- and Johnny Cash is still helping to make it happen.
